Background

Petrov Radazar was born to Sergei and Aleksa Radazar in the city of Volningrad in the Dorognia volozk of Khador. Sergei was a miner who worked his way up to supervisor, putting his earnings aside to ensure Petrov would receive a good education and wouldn't be subject to a lifetime of back breaking labour.

Sergei had managed to avoid conscription into the Winter Guard for a number of years but his time was finally up. Feeling that he had ridden his luck in avoiding accidents in the mines and realising that Petrov would never reach his potential in Khador, Sergei fled south with his family, finally settling in the slums of Corvis.

The Radazars were taken in by a kind noble family, the Bainbridges, for whom they worked as servants for a number of years, while paying for Petrov to receive a formal education. As a thank you for their years of service, the head of the family, Earl Camden Bainbridge, offered to pay for Petrov to attend Corvis University. Petrov proved to be a good student, taking an interest in many intellectual pursuits, but much to his father's chagrin, he found military history and tactics the most fascinating.

Petrov opted to take a break from his studies to join the Cygnaran army and serve in the Trenchers. He quickly grew frustrated, finding that his attempts to move up through the ranks were stifled due to the culture of nepotism but also because of discrimination against him for his Khadoran heritage. Overall his stint in the army lasted only a year but he made a lot of contacts and some lifelong friends including Commander Charles Pendleton, a senior figure in the Cygnaran army.

Petrov returned to Corvis University to further his studies where he met Katerine Mallory, a law student, with whom he fell in love and the two married soon after. Against his parents' wishes but with Katerine's blessing, Petrov moved into mercenary work - starting from the bottom, working as a bodyguard for a lesser noble and helping with the investigation of street crimes in the various cities of Cygnar. Soon enough, he was recruited by a large mercenary company and took part in a number of large skirmishes across all of the major nations, he found this work much to his liking - he loved the travelling and the pay but it also gave him the opportunity to prove himself as a capable leader.

Within a few years Petrov was so highly regarded that he was able to strike out on his own, returning home to Corvis to move into defence and security contracts, allowing him to stay close to Katerine and their newborn son while still earning good money. Petrov leads a team of four, the other members are:
  • Bartholomew Hunwick, the explorer and investigator. Petrov met Hunwick when they were students and recruited him years later after a chance encounter.
  • Grindar Doomspeaker, a legendary fighter and mercenary. Petrov first met Grindar through Katerine's legal work and they've worked together ever since.
  • Yelena Fedoreva, a Khadoran refugee and expert on the arcane. Petrov saved Yelena's life after she was pursued by agents of the Greylords Covenant.
Petrov's team have worked together successfully for a number of years and recently his thoughts have turned to retiring, in order to take a more active role in his son's life. His friendship with Pendleton has helped bring him some lucrative contracts and with more sure to follow, he'll be able to give this lifestyle up sooner rather than later.

Background

Grindar Doomspeaker was born into a kriel based in the Wyrmwall Mountains in southern Cygnar. Although lacking the fell calling abilities of his father, Grindar proved to be a fearsome warrior, earning the respect of his kin. One day, Grindar's kriel was attacked by blighted Trollkin, the battle was fierce and ultimately he was the only survivor. Bloody and battered, he stumbled to the nearest kriel only to find that they too had been massacred. Further exploration revealed that other kriels had suffered the same fate.

With nothing left for him in the wild and eager to leave his old life behind, he moved on to the nearest large community, Clockers Cove. His stay there was relativity short due to the small Trollkin population and the rampant crime and corruption but he did find the time to learn to speak Cygnaran fluently and earn some money from illegal fighting on the street and in arenas.

Grindar's next stop was in Corvis, where he joined a small mercenary company by the name of Pescar's Irregulars. The Irregulars became famous after accidentally uncovering a large conspiracy and saving the people of Corvis. The Irregulars disbanded after their leader Grigori Pescar moved north and Grindar grew lazy, coasting on his reputation and charging an extravagant fee for his services. His fame had passed and his money was quickly squandered, forcing him to compete in arena brawls for much less money than he was used to. The legitimisation of arena fighting in Corvis coincided with Grindar's winning streak entering into local folklore. Grindar felt alive again for the first time in years and the money was rolling in.

It all came to an end when Grindar was booked to face the mighty Borok Longspear in a fist fight. Longspear had coated his knuckles in an unapproved alchemical agent called Viagram, which has a hardening effect, and knocked Grindar out in front of a capacity crowd. Determined to preserve his winning streak of 247 fights (in reality it was around 70) and convinced that he had been cheated, Grindar hired Katerine Mallory, a lawyer, to get his loss overturned. Katerine asked her fiance, Petrov Radazar to help with the investigation. Petrov discovered Longspear's use of Viagram, after noticing stiffness in Grindar's nose and upper lip where he had been punched. In light of this evidence, the loss was overturned and a rematch was scheduled. With Petrov and Katerine as his guests of honour, Grindar easily triumphed and immediately announced his retirement. Petrov hired Grindar as his bodyguard at Katerine's request and over the years they became drinking buddies. As a gift for Grindar's years of service, Petrov commissioned a mechanikal war hammer for Grindar, named The Doorknocker.

The Doorknocker is named after the famous incident that occured when the Irregulars were in pursuit of the murderous Defenestrator of Drakesmere. The criminal locked himself in a room in order to slow down his pursuers and in an attempt to open the door with his hammer, Grindar accident hit it so hard that it flew off its hinges and into the murderer, knocking him through a window and killing him in a very ironic manner.

Grindar's love of ale lead to him carrying a keg everywhere he goes, which he justifies by using it as an improvised shield, going to the extent of reinforcing it to prevent unnecessary spillage. Although his methods are highly unorthodox, Grindar has been very successful at protecting his comrades and sometimes he'll even fill a tankard for them, which they cannot refuse at the risk of offending him, and forcing him out of retirement in order to settle the matter.

Background

Yelena Fedoreva was born to Vasily and Ludmila Fedoreva in the Khadoran capital of Korsk in the Khadorstead volozk. The Fedorevas were an affluent family, Vasily served the government as an economic advisor, a role which took up a lot of his spare time, leaving Ludmila to raise Yelena.

Yelena was a precocious child, discovering that she had the gift of magic at an early age but her spoiled upbringing left her naive to the repercussions of this discovery. Her father reported her arcane abilities to a senior Greylord official as soon as he became aware of them, eager to serve his empress and the motherland.

As she moved into her early teens, Yelena enjoyed her new life and the attention she was receiving. Her tutors indulged her creative side and her interest in nature which seemed to accelerate her progress in her study of the arcane. She quickly became a highly competent arcanist but her idealistic personality was contrary to what the Greylords Covenant expected from their initiates.

Despite the reservations of her obavnik, Yelena was moved to a chapter house as soon as she was old enough, it was there where the true purpose of her studies was revealed to her - she was to be a weapon of war. Her fellow initiates were impatient, desperate to take up the fight and serve their empress, just like her father, but she was horrified.

Nevertheless, she dedicated herself to her training, planning to escape as soon as possible, reasoning that any skills she picked up along the way could only help her efforts to free herself from this nightmare.

Along with two of her fellow initiates, Yelena was selected to take a tour of a hidden Greylord facility due to their exceptional aptitude. It was here where she saw researchers studying Orgoth relics and then their practical applications, or more specifically the 'training' of Doom Reavers - frothing madmen driven into a bloodlust by the whispering weapons they wield. It was the final straw for her, she couldn't be part of this, she had to leave Khador for good.

After the final day of their tour, the initiates stayed overnight in the town of Verona, just south of the city of Volningrad before returning to Korsk. It was on this night that Yelena fled, using her knowledge of the flora and fauna of the Gallowswood to survive over the next week until she managed to cross the border into Ord and found herself in the city of Midfast.

Although Yelena was free of Khador and any potential pursuers, Midfast brought its own challenges. Forced to sleep on the street, she had no money and didn't speak the language, it had also come to her attention that a lot of trade between Khadoran and Ordic merchants took place here and she could soon be discovered.

After being attacked by a thug one night, Yelena was forced to kill for the first time in her life, clumsily stabbing her assailant to death with a savage-looking curved blade she had acquired back in Khador. Distraught at this act, she reluctantly used a mesmeric spell she had been taught by the Greylords to get herself aboard a passenger train which finally stopped in the city of Fellig.

During the journey to Fellig, Yelena had decided she intended to settle in Cygnar, reasoning that it was the complete opposite of Khador, a kinder place where people enjoyed more personal freedom, loyal to their nation out of love, not duty.

In Fellig, Yelena befriended a Llaelese mercenary called Alana Viscario. Viscario had fled Llael when the Khadorans invaded, her stories only fuelled Yelena's hatred of Khador. The women worked together successfully for almost a year, guarding trade caravans crossing the Thornwood between Fellig and Corvis.

Yelena and Viscario raised enough money and had established enough of a reputation to move to Corvis permanently but much to Yelena's shock, Viscario wanted to return to Llael to join the Resistance.

Knowing that Yelena would want to follow her to Llael, Viscario left without saying a word but wrote a letter explaining that the Khadorans had taken everything from her but she wouldn't allow Yelena to suffer the same fate. She encouraged Yelena to seek out a man by the name of Petrov Radazar in Corvis, he too was a refugee from Khador and could understand how Yelena felt.

In Corvis, Yelena found Petrov very easily due to his fame and he hired her to his team very quickly after a simple look of recognition when she explained the moral decline of their former home.

Yelena's knowledge of the arcane made her very useful to Petrov's team and she quickly became accustomed to life in Cygnar under his leadership. She had finally found someone she could trust and although the Greylords may come looking for her, she's no longer afraid.
